Christopher Deal top

Christopher Deal, Ph.D. has more than 15 years of experience in the intercultural communication field as a trainer, consultant, manager, university instructor, and researcher. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of New Mexico, USA and an M.A. in International Communication from American University in Washington, DC, with both degrees focusing on Intercultural Communication. His areas of specialization include intercultural communication in the film and TV industries, intercultural training, training across cultures, Chinese culture, training design, and organizational communication.

Christopher has extensive experience managing and conducting training programs in both business and academic settings. His clients have included DuPont, Ericsson, Seagram, Philips, AIG, Eli Lilly, Scott Paper, Alstom, Wyeth, Maersk, Crown Worldwide, Tesco, Louisiana Tech University's Center for Educational Excellence, the University of New Mexico's Health Sciences Center, the Taipei City Government, and the University of Southern California. He has trained more than 100 trainers and has trained or taught people from 40 countries.

He has presented at numerous international conferences, including the SIETAR (Society for Intercultural Education, Training, and Research) Global Congress in Granada, Spain (upcoming in October 2008), SIETAR-USA, National Communication Association, Western States Communication Association, and the University of New Mexico's Culture and Communication Conference. His work has also been featured in China’s largest English language newspaper, China Daily.

Christopher recently served as Intercultural Communication Lecturer at California State University, Fullerton for two years. He taught large lecture sections (70-100 students) of Intercultural Communication, incorporating interactive, experiential methods into the classes. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for SIETAR-USA.

In Taiwan, Christopher taught at Soochow University and St. Mary's University of Minnesota's Masters of International Business Administration (MIBA) program in Taipei. In the USA, he taught at the University of New Mexico's Department of Communication & Journalism, including a course he designed called "Intercultural Training."

Christopher has lived and worked abroad for five years in Asia and Europe, has traveled in 21 countries, and speaks Mandarin Chinese. He has also studied German, Japanese, and Russian at the university level. In the early 1990s, he served in both the British Parliament and the U.S. Senate as a research assistant and intern.

Originally from Ruston, Louisiana, Christopher's personal interests include practicing and studying Chinese language and philosophy; reading and writing primarily nonfiction but also some fiction; studying, making, and watching films and videos; and studying astrophysics.

 

Victor H. Garza top

Victor H. Garza is an interculturalist who was born in Monterrey, Mexico and has lived, worked and studied in Canada, China, Germany, Mexico and the United States. He speaks English and Spanish fluently and has basic knowledge of French, German and Chinese. He has traveled throughout the world's six continents, having visited over 35 countries.

Since 1991, Victor began devoting himself as a cross-cultural trainer, working in academic, government and corporate settings and enhancing intercultural competence for International Assignments within the NAFTA (North America Free Trade Agreement) region, which includes Canada, Mexico and the United States.

In 1997 he moved to China to set up a liaison office for ITESM University System, a 32-campus university system also known as "Monterrey Tech," considered one of Latin America's most prestigious universities. He began coordinating study abroad programs between Mexico, China, Japan and South Korea and in 1998 he began an academic exchange program between Zhejiang University and Monterrey Tech. He has also taken EMBA study trips to China and South America (Argentina, Brazil and Chile). Victor was commended by Mexico's president Vicente Fox during his 2001 State visit to China in regards to his achievements in China-Mexico academic exchange programs.

In 1999 Victor established himself in Hangzhou as a trainer and consultant delivering language and cross-cultural programs for companies within Zhejiang province and the Yangtze River delta region such as Alibaba.com, Applied Materials, ChinaFrida.com, Delphi, General Electric, Hewlett Packard, Huntsman, Johnson Controls, Lucent Technologies, Microsoft, Owens Corning, Solectron and the Provincial Government of Zhejiang. In 2004 Victor was chosen to launch the Spanish TV Channel for China's Central TV (CCTV) as project director and main news anchorman.

Victor holds a B.Sc. in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management and a M.Ed. in International Relations with an Intercultural Communication approach. He has lectured at Tsinghua University's MBA Program (in Beijing, China), Zhejiang University (in Hangzhou, China) and ITESM University (in Monterrey, Mexico) on Intercultural Management, Intercultural Awareness and Intercultural Communication. In 2002 & 2003 he earned a scholarship from the United States to study a variety of special cross-cultural courses with an Asian focus which include: "Chinese and Japanese Mindscapes", "Asian Diversity in the Workplace", "Cross-cultural Training in International Corporations", and "Coaching Global Executives".

Victor now serves as senior cross-cultural trainer and consultant designing and delivering cross-cultural programs for the Chinese and the Expatriate communities found in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

In his spare time Victor writes for Chinese and Mexican magazines and he deeply enjoys outdoor activities such as trekking, photography and especially traveling.

 

Amie Kincaid top

Amie Kincaid is an Assistant Professor at Eureka College in Eureka, Illinois. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico, with specializations in intercultural and interpersonal communication. Amie likes to view intercultural and interpersonal communication as an interdependent relationship that can be used to help better understand issues surrounding social awareness. In addition to her Ph.D. work, Amie taught at Technical-Vocational Institute (TVI) in Albuquerque and worked as a Research Assistant for the Masters of Public Health.

Ms. Kincaid received her M.A. in Interpersonal Communication and her B.A. in Interpersonal Communication, Organizational Communication and Public Relations-both from Eastern Illinois University. Prior to beginning work on her PhD, Amie taught communication courses at Eastern Illinois University, Lakeland Community College, Southwestern Illinois College, and St. Louis Community College. She also spent eight years developing a youth swimming program in her hometown of Petersburg, Illinois. What has surprised Amie through her years of teaching is that she feels she has learned more than her students. In the future, Amie aims to teach and do social action research at the collegiate level.

Amie's personal interests include drawing, reading, hiking, yoga, listening to music and hanging out with friends. She hopes to enter a pottery class in the near future. Amie has one dog, a chocolate lab named Izabelle, that she and her husband, Phillip, enjoy going on hikes with. The three of them are looking forward to the day when they will have enough time and land to own horses. Until then, they will be satisfied with the wonderful outdoor adventures that Illinois and surrounding areas have to offer.

 

Christina Sanchez top

Christina Sanchez, Ph.D. is Director of International Student Services at the University of San Francisco. She received her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of New Mexico, specializing in Intercultural Communication; her M.A. in Education from James Madison University; and her B.A. in English and Psychology from the College of William and Mary.

Prior to beginning work on her Ph.D., Christina taught English in Japan. She also spent time working in administrative positions with student affairs at various institutions such as Kansas State University, James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University, and the University of Pittsburgh. Through her work with the University of Pittsburgh, Christina worked with Semester at Sea (SAS) on two different occasions and served as a recruiter for SAS while living in Kansas.

Personal and professional opportunities have made it possible for Dr. Sanchez to visit more than 26 countries. Her primary research areas of interest include racial identity development and issues of acculturation.

Christina's personal interests include traveling, reading, as well as playing cards, chess and tennis. She has two cats, Tomodachi (6 years old) and Amiga (5 years old). While she spent the first five years of her life living in Spain, she is not completely bilingual yet; however, Christina strives to develop her Spanish to a higher level of fluency with each passing year.

 

Avinash Thombre top

Avinash Thombre, Ph.D. is Assistant Professor of Speech Communication at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he has taught since 2004. His research and teaching areas are in health communication, the impact of new technologies on health message dissemination, health-related transformative experiences, and entertainment education. In addition, he has published four scholarly articles, one book chapter, and several technical reports.

Dr. Thombre received his B.Sc. and M.S. in Communication from Bangalore University, India, and his Ph.D. degree in Communication from the University of New Mexico. He is fascinated by human communication practices and wants to study the subject throughout his career. He believes communicative behavior is basic to human activity and is important for individual development, interpersonal enhancement, and the functioning of political, economic, cultural, and social institutions. Thus, he critically studies communicative behavior with the goal of understanding the structure, patterns, and effects of human communication and of facilitating a higher quality of communication for both individuals and society.

As a researcher, Dr. Thombre’s main areas of focus are Health Communication, New Technologies and Intercultural Communication. He is interested in using the Internet and new technologies to initiate health behavior change. His future research agenda will involve (1) the social impact of new media technologies, with particular emphasis on health; (2) the convergence of new communication technologies and their impact on identity, culture and health; and (3) alternative perspectives on communication theories.

At the University of New Mexico, Dr. Thombre’s dissertation focused on the investigation of message effectiveness of cancer websites. The dissertation research was directed by Distinguished Professor Everett M. Rogers—famous for his work on Diffusion of Innovations. The dissertation identified useful web-site message development variables by undertaking a content analysis and tested effectiveness of cancer web-site message variables by conducting a randomized trial.

Dr. Thombre is married and likes to do country biking, swimming, hiking and other outdoor activities. He relishes in engaging in scholarly research and being open to new ideas. Teaching and working with students is very close to his heart.
